Contemporary Art for Nisida: An Exhibition Supporting the Juvenile Detention Centre Theatre

zazà (Milan, Naples) and Galleria Federico Vavassori (Milan) present a group exhibition in support of Fondazione Severino, with the aim of raising funds for the restoration of the theatre at the Nisida Juvenile Detention Centre.

The initiative is inspired by the cultural and civic legacy of Eduardo De Filippo who, in 1982, upon being appointed Senator for Life, devoted his inaugural speech before the Italian Senate to the issue of juvenile detention and to the urgent need to provide young detainees with concrete opportunities for reintegration, trust, and a future.

In the years that followed, Eduardo visited Nisida several times, personally contributing to the renovation of the theatre and designing its new structure. Within the detention centre, he also established a stagecraft school and an acting school, involving actors from his theatre company in the creation of the first theatrical performance ever staged inside an Italian juvenile detention institution.

“I am convinced that, if we work with energy, love and trust in these young people, much can be achieved,” Eduardo declared during his speech before the Senate on March 23, 1982.

Inspired by this vision, the exhibition seeks to concretely support the restoration of a symbolic space deeply connected to the growth, expression, and education of young detainees. Even today, the theatre remains a place of listening, human connection, and transformation, capable of opening new perspectives through culture and the arts.

Proceeds from the initiative will support the restoration project of the theatre at the Nisida Juvenile Detention Centre, promoted with the support of Fondazione Severino.
