Fondazione Severino and Komen Italia together for women’s health in prisons
Events
The Severino Foundation, together with the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Justice, and Komen Italia – Think Pink Italy, promotes a multi-year programme dedicated to protecting the health of women in detention or subject to restrictive measures of personal freedom.
The initiative brings prevention activities, health education, and free cancer screening programmes into women’s correctional facilities, with the aim of ensuring concrete and continuous access to early diagnosis pathways, even in contexts of greater vulnerability.
At the core of the project is the Carovana della Prevenzione by Komen Italia – Think Pink Italy, which, through equipped Mobile Units, provides direct access to clinical screening services for the early detection of women’s cancers inside prisons.
Alongside screening activities, the programme includes health education, counselling, and the promotion of healthy lifestyles, carried out in collaboration with Local Health Authorities and prison administrations.
The Severino Foundation contributes to the operational coordination of the activities and monitors the impact of the project, with the aim of strengthening integrated and replicable intervention models at national level.
To date, the programme has already been implemented in several correctional facilities across Italy, including Chieti, Reggio Calabria, Castrovillari, and Teramo (twice), bringing prevention, screening, and awareness activities directly to incarcerated women.
A joint initiative that places the right to health at its centre, bringing prevention and care where access to healthcare services is most difficult.
