On May 11, 2026, in the “Giovanni Paolo II” Aula Magna at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, Paola Severino took part in the roundtable discussion of Governance Complexity Competence, a conference dedicated to the theme “Empowering the Marginalized in Complex Worlds.”

At the heart of her speech was the mission of the Fondazione Severino and the work carried out over the years within prison contexts: an approach grounded in the belief that legality and merit are not abstract principles, but concrete tools to place in people’s hands. Because work — understood as education, acquired skills, and real opportunities for reintegration — is the most effective response to recidivism, not only for the individuals involved, but for society as a whole.

Alongside this, Paola Severino highlighted the transformative value of the artistic and cultural workshops promoted by the Foundation: experiences that are never merely complementary activities, but genuine tools for personal and relational growth. Concrete examples include The Trojan Women, performed by incarcerated women from Civitavecchia at the Nuovo Teatro Ateneo of Sapienza University; the crochet workshops that contributed to the creation of Venus, the monumental artwork by the internationally renowned artist Joana Vasconcelos developed in collaboration with Fondazione Valentino; and the listening and counseling service that supports incarcerated individuals on their path toward reintegration.

These are moments that restore dignity, open spaces for dialogue, and generate concrete ideas. Because transforming complex environments into places of possibility is exactly what we work toward every day.
