On 8th July, Fondazione Severino took part in the Conference on the Execution of Criminal Sentences, contributing to the fourth panel dedicated to the theme of inclusion.

During the session, Vice President Eleonora Di Benedetto shared the Foundation's experience within Italian correctional institutions, emphasizing that inclusion should not be seen as a goal to be pursued only after release, but as a process that begins on the very first day of detention.

Building on reflections recently shared at the Council of Europe Conference in Malta on people in detention with specific vulnerabilities, her speech highlighted the need to develop truly person-centred and tailored rehabilitation pathways capable of responding to individual needs.

Particular attention was devoted to women's detention, a small yet highly significant part of the prison population that often concentrates multiple social, economic and personal vulnerabilities. From motherhood to experiences of violence, from interrupted educational and employment paths to mental health challenges, women in prison clearly demonstrate the importance of an approach that places the individual at the centre of rehabilitation.

Presenting the Foundation's work, Eleonora Di Benedetto outlined the evolution of its projects within correctional facilities: from vocational training programmes to artistic and cultural workshops, developed through direct experience and the understanding that successful reintegration depends not only on acquiring practical skills, but also on rebuilding identity, confidence and positive relationships.

"Culture is not an additional element within prison; it is a powerful tool for inclusion. Work is not merely an employment opportunity, but a daily exercise in responsibility. Education does not simply provide skills—it restores confidence in one's own abilities."

The speech concluded with a call for stronger and more structured cooperation between prison administrations, judicial authorities, local institutions, universities, businesses and civil society organisations, recognising that inclusion can only be achieved through a shared and long-term commitment.

For Fondazione Severino, investing in culture, education and employment means giving concrete effect to the rehabilitative purpose of criminal sanctions enshrined in the Italian Constitution, while contributing to the development of a more effective, fair and humane penal system.
